Lawyer perishes in house fire

KUCHING: A lawyer was found dead after a fire broke out at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho here yesterday.

The 8.45pm incident claimed the life of a man identified as Kiong Chiew Huat @ King Chiu Huat, aged 66.

State Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director, Tiong Ling Hii said the department received the distress call at 8.46pm.

Thirteen firefighters were rushed to the scene, where they found the three-storey building engulfed in flames.

It is learned that the victim arrived at the scene after he was informed of the fire involving his premises (a law firm).

“The victim was not at the scene when the fire broke out. After finding out his premises was involved in the fire, he (victim) rushed there and went straight up to his house located on the third floor despite being stopped by the public.

“However, it is believed that he failed to escape the blaze and was found burnt beyond recognition in the living room,” Tiong added.

He also said the victim was the owner of a law firm located on the ground floor of the same shophouse.

Tiong added that the remains of the victim have been handed over to the police for further action.
