Senate adjourns sine die after passing 19 bills

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara adjourned sine die yesterday after sitting for six days and passing 19 bills.

The bills were the Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill 2017, Private Employment Agencies (Amendment) Bill 2017, Land Public Transport (Amendment) Bill 2017, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (Amendment) Bill 2017, Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill 2017,

Prevention of Crime (Amendment) Bill 2017, Legal Aid (Amendment) Bill 2017, Access to Biological Resources and Benefit Sharing Bill 2017, Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Amendment) Bill 2017, Trade Descriptions (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents (Amendment) Bill 2017, Kedah Regional Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017, Johor Tenggara Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017, Terengganu Tengah Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017, Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Bill 2017, Malaysian Border Security Agency Bill 2017, Armed Forces Fund (Amendment) Bill 2017 and Securities Commission of Malaysia (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said in a statement yesterday that the active participation of the senators showed that the house continued to provide a check and balance in the formulation of legislation.

“The atmosphere showed that the system of parliamentary democracy was thriving,” she said.

Dewan Negara president Datuk S A Vigneswaran said at the conclusion of proceedings that he was proud of the performance of the senators who he said were responsible and adhered to the stipulated rules.

He also expressed his thanks to the four senators, namely S Bagiam Ayem Perumal, Tan Sri S Nallakaruppan, Datuk Jaspal Singh and Datuk V Subramaniam,  who completed their term of office. — Bernama
