SMK St Thomas wins Petrosains Science Show Competition 2017

KUCHING: SMK St Thomas was state champion at the finals of the ‘Petrosains Science Show Competition 2017’ held at Mydin Samariang yesterday.

Abiezer Channio Abeng and Castor Luis Mejos who carried out several interesting science experiments for the judges and the crowd won RM500 cash, plaque, certificate and Petrosains merchandise.

The duo will represent the state at the grand finals to be held at Putrajaya in October where they will compete with winners from other states. The winner of this national level competition stands a chance to win a trip (worth RM30,000) for four to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Tokyo along with RM10,000 cash and trophy.

In second place at the state level competition were Emily Chong Chiaw Yik of SMK Lake, Bau and Bong Zhen Qiang and third, Chin Hau Zen of SMK Jalan Arang.

The competition saw over 1,800 entries submitted by participating schools judged on general overview, science content, performance, delivery and extras such as visual aid, costume or special effects.

Organised by Petrosains, The Discovery Centre for the ninth time this year, the competition was introduced to popularise the science subject and promote effective and informal learning methods among secondary school students.

The competition is endorsed by the Ministry of Education while Bank Islam came up with the cash for the competition.

Also present were State Education assistant director Salina Bujang and Petrosains Sdn Bhd corporate communications head Azura Daud.
