SDNU President Cup badminton tourney on Sept 21

KUCHING: Sarawak Dayak National Union SDNU Youth (Belia SDNU) are aiming to make an impact in the SDNU President Cup 2017 badminton tournament.

According to team captain Sebastian Klambu, Belia SDNU would feature former and existing inter-division school players comprising teachers and students from Miri, Sibu, Betong and Kuching.

One of the women players has also trained with talent camp Nusa Mahsuri, he added.

“I do not know how the team will fare in the forthcoming tournament but I believe they can pose a serious challenge to other competitors. However I do hope they give their best and play to win.”

“I hope this tournament will become a platform for players to gain experience and also be a stand out to get spotted for national events,” he said when met here on Wednesday when meeting SDNU Youth chairman Churchill Edward Drem to discuss on team sponsorship and preparation.

A potential player Eric Boi accompanied Sebastian at the meeting.

SDNU will be organising the championship at Sentosa Sports Center, Jalan Stakan in Kota Sentosa here on Sept 21, 22 and 23.

This championship is open to the Dayaks and the closing date for submission of participation is  at 4.30pm on Sept 18. The draw will be held at 12.30pm on Sept 21. The categories to be contested includes Doubles Veteran (Men aged 45 and above), Doubles Men Open and Doubles Women Open.

Each team can have a minimum of four and maximum of 10 players.  Participation fee is RM300 per team. The champion team will take home RM3,200 while the second best (RM2,000) and joint third team (RM500 each).

The tournament will be launched at 11am on Sept 22 at Sentosa Sports Centre and the closing and prize giving ceremony at 7pm on Sept 23 at Penview Hotel here.

SDNU president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, his deputy Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi and Vice president Tan Sri Empiang Jabu are the event patrons and SDNU treasurer-general Christopher Gira Sambang is the event advisor.
