KUCHING: The Projek Bandar Samariang Sdn Bhd (PBSSB) celebrated its 20 years of growth and development with an entertainment extravaganza for the Bandar Samariang community at the Mydin Hypermarket here yesterday.

A concert that gathered popular artistes with the likes of Misha Omar, Hazama, Noh Salleh, Ashraf Hardy, At Adau, Eleena Harris, Ricky Andrewson, The Double Shoes, Floor 88 and Ila Damia was the highlight of the event, themed ‘20 Years With You’.

It was supported by local radio station Cats FM, which broadcast the day’s line-up of activities to mark the special milestone for the PBSSB and the community that it serves.

PBSSB is a subsidiary of Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMSB).

CMSB group managing director Dato’ Richard Curtis, who spoke Sarawak Malay in his opening remarks, thanked those who attended the event and also expressed his appreciation to the Bandar Samariang community for their solid support over the past 20 years.

“I hope that we would continue to receive your support for the development of this township.”

Curtis said the establishment of Bandar Samariang was consistent with Sarawak’s greater plan to continue on its growth path, delivering opportunities and development to the people.

“It is this drive for success and the responsible approach to all stakeholders that underpin CMSB’s culture towards creating stronger and better communities with the resources to grow and prosper,” he said.

PBSSB owns the overall 5,245-acre new township in the northern part of the city, Bandar Samariang.

With the first phase of development spanning over 665 acres of land nearing completion, the township project now enters its second phase, spearheaded by the sale of 500 acres of land to Sentoria Group Bhd for Borneo Samariang Resort City – a mixed-use development that will feature a number of signature components – a 200-acre water theme park, safari park, hotel and convention centre with meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) facilities that will further enhance and attract visitors from outside the state capital and also Sarawak, to Samariang.

PBSSB was launched on Aug 23, 1997. Back then, Samariang was largely undeveloped and still in its natural state.

The land was soon cleared and after that, housing development got underway, beginning with the first 100 units in 1998. Nowadays, there are more than 2,500 houses there today.

As development progressed, so did the level of quality workmanship and sophisticated designs, spearheaded by CMS Property Development’s philosophy to build on specifications, on time, and to a high standard.

Phase I comprises 600 acres with 5,000 housing units (completed), with last year marking the opening of the first Mydin Hypermarket in the state and also a light industrial park – creating new jobs.

After the opening ceremony, Curtis presented a mobile library to SK Bandar Samariang and a six-month e-subscription of an English national daily to SMK Bandar Samariang.
