KUCHING: Malaysians have the responsibility to keep looking for new opportunities  for progress that would make their ancestors proud and provide their grandchildren with a flourishing country they call home.

In stating this, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said in this period of growth and development, the nation must not forget to look back to what led the country to where it is today.

“Over 60 years ago, the nation fought for its independence, an endeavour that would not have been accomplished but for the cooperative support of the entire country.

“Today, the need of a union between Malaysians that transcends race, religion and even gender has not dwindled but perhaps become even more crucial. If we are to effectively pursue the development of our country, we must not forget the values that brought us here today,” she said in her National Day message yesterday.

With the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) initiative moving forward, Nancy urged the rakyat and youths in particular to voice out their aspirations.

“When Wawasan 2020 was first put forward, the platform for collaboration and sharing of ideologies was much more limited than it is today.”

She pointed out that the next few years would be crucial in laying down the backbone of growth for the following three decades and it would be a devastating loss to the country if the voices of bright Malaysians went unheard.

“It is undeniable that the metaphorical torch for this era of politicians is gradually being passed on.

“As such, the responsibility is on us to do what we can to pave the way for future generations to do right by what we did wrong and to do better what we managed to get right.”

The Batang Sadong MP also expressed her pride to see that the nation has its eyes set on the future of the country, commending the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) for doing wonders in overseeing the MRT project which appears to have had a swift and considerable impact on the Klang Valley community.

“The Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation (MNPC) is committed to engaging the public to listen, understand and address their views on nuclear power, the various planning processes involved in the nuclear energy development programme for Malaysia as well as gather feedback and opinions from Malaysians to evaluate the country’s readiness to develop a nuclear energy programme.

“It has also been a privilege to be involved with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) and Genovasi as they continue making great progress in shaping the minds of our civil servants through the Design Thinking Innovation Ambassador (DTIA) programme so they are able to introduce greater elements of innovation into their services,” she said and noted that Sarawak will be the first state in Malaysia to commit to DT training.

These successes and prevailing pursuits to lead Malaysia into the future, she added, were a clear indication of the strength behind a unified Malaysia and the benefits Malaysians have gained and shared as a united nation.

“It seems only fitting that as we stand on the brink of the 4th industrial revolution, we remind the nation and ourselves to not let go of what makes us truly Malaysian – the strength in our diversity and the unity we share.  As we celebrate six decades of strength and perseverance, I pray that the unique bond we share as Malaysians will only grow stronger in the years to come,” she shared.
