KUCHING: Two events will be organised by the state government to celebrate the official birthdays of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Head of State this year, which both fall on Sept 9.

In July this year, the Prime Minister’s Department announced that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V’s official birthday would be on Sept 9, coinciding with the official birthday of Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

A Majlis Doa Selamat (Thanksgiving Prayer) will be held on Sept 8 for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Head of State at Masjid Jamek in Petra Jaya.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the prayer will be attended by Taib, his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Amar Datuk Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

Then on Sept 10, a ‘High Tea’ reception will be held at the Waterfront Hotel to mark the birthday of both Sultan Muhammad and Taib, during which Taib would present gifts to the needy and later on launch two exhibitions known as ‘Pameran Dirgahayu’ and ‘Raja Kita’ (Our King).

“It is a good opportunity for members of the public to visit the exhibitions organised by the Malaysian Information Department to learn about the roles, functions and activities of the Head of State and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V was born in 1969 at the Istana Batu in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He took his oath of office as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 13, 2016,” added Awang Tengah.

Awang Tengah was speaking at a press conference after a meeting at Stadium Negeri yesterday.
