KUCHING: The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) head coach post left vacant by David Yusop has attracted the interest of several coaches including foreign ones to lead the Crocs in the next season.

FAS president Dato Posa Majais revealed that two of them have already indicated their interest to take over from caretaker coach Pengiran Bala.

“One of the applications was submitted by a foreign coach attached with a Philippines football club while the other is from the assistant coach of Felda United FC who had previously played for Sarawak in the Super League,” said Posa.

According to him, the two other names are familiar to Sarawak football fans: Mohamad Mentali and assistant coach during Alan Vest’s era Lucas Kallang.

“Yes, there has been rumours going around saying that two local coaches are interested in the job but FAS has yet to receive any applications from the duo,” added Posa.

The FAS chief also spoke on the current status of David Yusop.

“David is still with us and his status will only be decided at a FAS exco meeting before or after the Super League ends,” he explained.

He stressed that the hiring of a new coach should be done very carefully and reiterated that the FAS practises the “local” principle.

As such, the association will scrutinise all applications before making the decision to hire the coach with priority given to local coaches.

“We need to see whether Sarawak can retain their position in the Super League next season before making any decisions,” Posa said.
