MIRI: SK Kuala Baram is set to be the first school in the state to have a double-storey academic block built using the pre-fabricated Industrialised Building System (IBS) materials.

According to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the project is expected to reach completion this November following the commencement of works in June this year.

“The new academic block consists of six classrooms – from Year 1 to Year 6 – and is to replace the dilapidated (old) building. The school applied for a new block two years ago as the old single-storey building was found to be unsafe and not conducive to both pupils and teachers. The project also includes a new fence for the school,” said Lee during a visit to the project site yesterday, adding that the works are progressing according to schedule.

Meanwhile, SK Kuala Baram headmaster Affendi Paun disclosed that the school currently has 107 pupils from Kuala Baram and nearby villages, along with 18 teachers and three support staff members.

Lee also inspected two rural transformation projects, namely a boathouse and plank walk jetty for fishermen and the public at Kampung Muhibbah in Kuala Baram. The boathouse is able to accommodate eight boats at one time, and allows fishermen to head out to sea at any time. Prior to construction, the fishermen had to push their boats to sea during low tide.
