KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Tan Kai, says he would rather continue to be a political secretary to the chief minister than to lobby for the Bandar Kuching seat in the coming general election.
He said his present position as a political secretary was a better platform to serve the people.
“There are many new faces in SUPP now and as such I leave it to the party’s top leadership to choose its candidates for the coming polls. No one should dominate everything because that is not healthy for the party,” he said in his attempt to ward off further questions on the subject from the press.
He added that party members should not think of him as the only one capable to be fielded for Bandar Kuching.
“However, we treasure the people’s support for the party during the state election last year, which helped us to win seven seats,” he said when met after he handed over the ‘Datuk Sim Kui Hian Cup 2017’ to the organiser, and after the balloting of the football tournament features at SUPP Headquarters here yesterday.
Tan Kai went on to say that SUPP supporters were found in almost every part of Sarawak, and that their mobile service teams were meeting them every week.
“The party will continue to serve the people and that is the most important thing,” he added.
In the last general election in 2013, Tan Kai contested the Bandar Kuching seat but lost to DAP’s Chong Chieng Jen by 19,642 votes.
Chong, who is the DAP chairman and Pakatan Harapan Sarawak chairman is likely to defend his seat.
