Titles loom as Malaysians advance

Mitsuki Leong Wei Kang of Malaysia created an upset 6-3, 6-2 win over the top seed Chan Tsz Him of Hong Kong.

Malaysia’s Chan Li Ying defeated Shihomi Leong Li Xuan 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the last four.

KUCHING: Elsa Wan of Malaysia edged closer to winning the girl singles title at the 12th Sarawak ATF 14 & Under Series tennis championship at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association yesterday.

The tournament’s top seed eased past Vietnam’s Thaohan Le 6-1, 6-1 to set up a semi-final clash with compatriot Lim Sze Xuan who upset the eighth seed from Singapore Julienne Goh 6-1, 6-2 in the last eight.

Malaysia had another semi-finalist in Chan Li Ying who tamed her opponent Shihomi Leong Li Xuan 6-4, 6-3 and Chan will play South Korea’s Lee Eun Ji for the ticket to the final.

Lee scalped the seventh seed from Indonesia Brigita Brigita 6-4, 6-3.

The boys singles semi-finals was also dominated by Malaysia who had grabbed three out of the four slots.

Mitsuki Leong Wei Kang, the seventh seed, impressed with a 6-3, 6-2 upset win over the top seed Chan Tsz Him of Hong Kong and he next faces third seed Tan Lin En in the last four.

Second seed Thehan Wijemane moved safely into the semi-finals when he beat Darius Wong of Malaysia 7-5, 6-0.

The Sri Lankan’s opponent in the last four is fourth seed Leroy Yong who defeated fifth seed Curtis Tan Hong Tseng 6-0, 6-1.

Meanwhile, top seeds Chloe Chong Zhi Jing of Malaysia and Cheuk Ying Shek of Hong Kong booked their place in today’s final when they overcame the challenge from the Malaysian pair of Chan Li Ying-Chan Yu Chi 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals.

They will play for the title against another Malaysian pair Shihomi Leong-Lim Sze Xuan after the latter upstaged third seeds Lydia Liong Tng En-Amanda Yeoh 6-3, 6-0.

The finalists for the boys doubles are top seeds Chan Tsz Him-Curtis Tan Hong Tseng of Hong Kong and second seeds Mitsuki Leong-Leroy Yong of Malaysia.

The Hong Kong pair took three sets to subdue Maxwell Castle-Rupert Ohrelle Tortal 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 while Leong-Yong emerged 6-1, 6-3 winners over Hayden Khoo Menon (Malaysia) and Thehan Wijemane (Sri Lanka) in the semi-finals.
