LABUAN: An attempt by several people to smuggle RM105,000 worth of contraband alcoholic drinks yesterday came to an unexpected end when a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol from Labuan stumbled upon them in Labuan – Menumbok waters.

Although the smugglers fled inland near the Mempakul river, they left behind the contraband, as well as a speed boat with a Yamaha engine worth more than RM250,000.

Labuan MMEA director Maritime Captain Che Adnan Md Isa said the patrol boat was conducting routine operation in Labuan waters at 1.15am when they spotted a suspicious-looking speed boat from Labuan speeding towards Menumbok.

“After tailing the speedboat for about 10 minutes, the smugglers sensed the presence of our team, and they sped off towards shallow waters along the Mempakul River  and escaped, leaving the contraband behind.

The contraband consisting of Carlsberg, Royal Stout and Skol Beer will be handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further action.
