KUCHING: Heavy rain failed to dampen the spirit of the 250 runners who turned up for the Masjid Tebingan Fun Run at the State Masjid Tebingan on Sunday.

The run was jointly organised by the Kampung Masjid Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and PBB Ranting Masjid.

Political secretary to Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency Hamzah Brahim, who represented the Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf, flagged off the participants.

Organising chairman Abdul Razak Dol said the organising committee had to turn down 300 entries on security concern and as the 4-km run was organized for the first time.

PBB Ranting Bintangor and Kampung Kudie had each fielded 40 runners for the event.

“This is a commitment to Satok folks to ensure that Satok is clean, comfortable and safe in line with the theme “Let’s Xplore D Masjid Tebingan”.

“Our main objective of organising this run is to give the opportunity to the participants to show their responsibility in helping to keep the water front free of rubbish and vandalism.

“The idea of organisng this run came from the iconic bridge which provides the link for the two villages,” said Razak who added they are planning to make the run an annual event on the JKKK Kampung Masjid calendar to celebrate Malaysia Day.

He recorded his appreciation to Chung Hua Middle School and its principal for providing 10 marshals, Police and DBKU traffic wardens for ensuring that the event was smoothly conducted.

Hamzah, together with several community leaders and guests, later performed a symbolic planting of trees along the water front.

Other activities included a lucky draw and a zumba dance session.

Among those present at the event were PBB Satok Youth Chief Iskandar Sharkawi, PBB Satok deputy head and special officer to Minstry of Works, Basri Bolhassan and Kampung Masjid head Iskandar Landau.
