Western Zone to compete in 13 sports in 2017 Suksar

SARIKEI: Western Zone comprising Sarikei, Sri Aman and Betong divisions will compete in 13 of the 18 sports at the Sukan Sarawak (Suksar) to be held in Kuching from Dec 14 to 17.

These are handball, lawn bowling, rugby, petanque, weight-lifting, athletics, sepak takraw, badminton, cycling, archery and muaytai while their para athletes will take part in athletics and swimming.

They are skipping judo, karate, swimming events and two sports for disabled athletes (archery and powerlifting).

This was disclosed by Sarikei Resident Mohd Junaidi Mohidin who together with his counterparts from Sri Aman and Betong attended a meeting of officials from the zone here yesterday.

The zone will send 167 athletes and 78 officials to the state-level games.

Zone-level competitions will be held from this weekend to select athletes to represent the zone.

Selection of the handball squad will take place at the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Hall here, cycling in Debak, athletics at Betong Sport Complex and shuttlers at Sri Aman Police Multipurpose Hall on Sept 23-24.

Suksar, revived after a lapse of 17 years, will see competition between the Northern Zone (comprising Limbang, Miri and Bintulu), Central Zone (Kapit, Mukah and Sibu) and Southern Zone (Serian, Samarahan and Kuching).
