KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat recently joined Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also Kapit MP, to attend the ‘Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ organised by Special Affairs Department (Jasa) and PBB Kapit, at Rumah Seliong near here.

Accompanying them were heads of government departments and community leaders.

The purpose of the visit was to meet longhouse communities from Sungai Belawai area.

In his speech, Jamit thanked voters of Sungai Belawai and nearby areas for their strong support for him during the May 7 2016 state election, which enabled him to win the Bukit Goram constituency.

To the hundreds of constituents attending the gathering, he pledged to serve them with full dedication to live up to their expectations.

“I thank you all for voting me to be your assemblyman. In return, I will do my best to serve you,” he pledged to the cheering crowd.

Pointing out that he was familiar with the Sungai Belawai area as he had travelled there extensively when he was political secretary to the chief minister, he assured them that he knew their needs and that many more projects would be implemented there to uplift their standard of living.

“These include physical projects and also agricultural inputs to help you develop your land,” he said.

He also informed that Kapit now had the Barisan Nasional (BN) Team to spur more development in the division.

He said the team comprised Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing (Baleh assemblyman), Nanta, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang and himself.

On another note, he reminded that it was usual for the opposition to come around before election to fish for votes, and spreading lies about the ruling government.

“The rakyat must realise the opposition’s tactic is to belittle the government’s efforts to uplift their standard of living, especially those in the rural areas. Bear in mind, all development projects come from the government.

On the other hand, the opposition is only good at giving ‘lip service’ but doing nothing to help the people.

“So the people should only support the government candidate in the coming 14th general election,” he said, naming Nanta as the BN candidate for Kapit.

To parents, he reminded them to give their children’s education priority, saying good education is the path to a better life.

Meanwhile, Penghulu Pasang Tuba, the community chief for Sungai Ensilai, Sungai Belawai and Sungai Goh areas, praised Jamit for keeping his promises.

“Jamit fulfilled his promises. Last year during the election, he promised to return after the election. He honoured his words. Since he was elected a year ago, he has returned twice to Sungai Belawai,” he said.

Political secretary to the chief minister Tapah Ata and Kapit district officer Elvis Didit were among heads of government departments attending the gathering.

Community leaders present included Temenggong Wilfred Billy Panyau, Pemanca Enggin Nyipa and Tuai Rumah Seliong.
