KUCHING: The Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) recently organised a mental training workshop for 40 state athletes from the Sarawak State Sports School – SMK Tabuan Jaya – as a part of its ongoing workshops conducted by Dr Garry Kuan Pei Ern (USM), Dr Chin Ngien Siong (IPGKTAR) and Dr Balbir Singh Bhagawan Singh.

The athletes were introduced to mental training using interactive methodology and activity centric to discover themselves mentally in order to achieve their performance goals and a competition with the proper mindset. These approaches enabled athletes to acquire these strategies in a progressive and holistic way.

Biofeedback analysis assessment was also conducted by Garry and Chin to help the athletes gain awareness of how anxiety or stress can affect their bodies and minds and how to bring their stress responses under greater conscious control through effective mental training skills.

SSC chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee said the athletes, coaches and teachers have to acquire and implement the psychological training into regular practice sessions and into competitions to perform to their best.

The workshop coordinator was SSC Sports Development and Training Resources unit head Jubali Suhaili.
