Golf prodigy Angel in a class of her own

KUCHING: State junior golf star Angel Hii won the Ladies Club Championship for the second consecutive year at the Kelab Golf Club in Petra Jaya yesterday.

The 13-year old Tunku Putra International School student returned a two-day gross score of 158 strokes (75, 83) to post a massive 23-stroke win over Rebecca Sia and Asha Nabeela Abdul Rahman (186).

Angel received the challenge trophy, the champion’s trophy and a goods voucher.

The nett title was won by Latifah Lian who hit a 154 to finish ahead of KGS committee member Pauline Gan.

Daniel Yeo Thian Chai emerged as the new champion in the Open category after he carded a two-day gross score of 159 (77, 82) to walk off with the challenge trophy, champion’s trophy and a goods voucher.

Three strokes behind him was Johari Aman. Waili Abang was third on 167, finishing one stroke ahead of South Korean Yoon Myung Sub, two ahead of Mohd Fikri Mohamad while junior golfer Saxen Hii, 12, impressed with a fifth place finish by posting a score of 170.

The nett title was won by Muhammad Hadif Fathley whose score was 140 and three strokes behind him was Mohd Nur Aiman while Christopher Chang was third with a 147 OCB.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Senior Championship was decided by a play-off where Abdul Aziz Sahari beat Abang Abdul Rahman after the scores of both golfers was tied at 159 (gross) strokes.

Aziz received the challenge trophy, champion’s trophy and a goods voucher. It was his second win in this championship after winning it in 2015.

Defending champion Bernett Ling Soon Kiong managed a 162 to finish third while the fourth to sixth placings were won by Kenny Chin Jee Poh (164), Hoan Kee Hock (170) and Dato Wan Abdillah Edruce (173).

Talha @ Talhah Affandi fired a 141 to claim the nett crown and Zayadi Sebli was second with 142 while two strokes further in third place was Dillah Ahmad with a 144 score.

Champions of the three categories (Open, Senior, Ladies) also won themselves a one-year allocated parking lot at the club.

The prizes were given away by KGS captain Dr David Sylvester Ling Shieng Tee and committee members Kasim Gani and Pauline Gan.

There was no winner for the hole-in-one prize – a Lexus NX 200t Special Edition sports utility car which was sponsored by Boulevard Jaya Sdn Bhd – but Yeo aced the wrong hole-in-one at Demak Hole 14 for a cash prize of RM2,000.
