BARIO: Incessant rain for the past two days has resulted in flooding and landslides in the Kelabit highlands of Bario.

Several houses in lower lying areas in Central Bario and villages on the outskirts of Pa’ Dalih, Ramudu and Pa Madah were inundated while a major landslide was reported to have occurred in Puneng Berayang.

However, the Bario Voluntary Fire Fighting unit and the state Department of Civil Defence operations room monitoring the situation reported that the flood has started receding.

The water level was as high as two-feet at about 2am on Monday but no evacuations have been reported.

Sarawak State Assembly deputy speaker and Mulu state assemblyman Gerawat Gala when contacted said he was informed of the situation and advised locals to exercise caution when travelling and to watch out for landslides during their journey.

“Road users heading to Bario must be alert and extra careful during this rainy season as road conditions may be not be as good as during dry weather and there is always the risk of landslides,” he said.

“Take extra precaution by shutting off any electrical wiring and appliances which may come into contact with floodwaters,” he said.

The deputy speaker also urged them to report any loss to property and crops to the authorities.
