“Unlike in previous editions, the selection committee has this year decided to visit schools outside Sibu except Miri to present the awards personally to the recipients,” said committee chairman Hii Sui Cheng, adding that 31 candidates were nominated for the fifth edition.

The committee members visited SMK Tinggi here last Friday to present the awards to taekwondo exponents Danny Tunduit, Angel Yii Sheau Ting and Ngu Pei Lin; volleyball player Alfred Wong; discus thrower Ngu Ing Biao; shot putter Celine Khoo Wei Eng from SMK Tinggi; hammer thrower Fabian Sia Sung Siong; discus throwers William Wong Tung Wei and Wong Xiao Jing from SMK Tong Hua Bintangor.

Each received RM600 and a certificate.

Four other recipients are from Sibu and, for the first time, seven are from Miri.

This year’s HKL Sports Volunteer Extraordinaire Award, which came with RM1,500 and a certificate, went to Miri’s Ling Yuen Lee who was picked from three nominees.

Ling’s contributions included being assistant manager for the Sarawak athletics contingent at the national championships for four years.
