BINTULU: A group of 20 students from SMK Bandar Bintulu, who would take part at the state-level Petronas’ ‘All About Youth’ (AAY) programme, launched their ‘Power of solar – Dark Into Light’ project yesterday.

Sarawak Petronas AAY coordinator Ekni Raduan officiated at the launching ceremony in Dewan Teratai of SMK Bandar Bintulu.

AAY is a corporate social investment programme by Petronas, aimed at empowering youths by providing them with a platform to showcase their abilities and creativity.

In his speech, Ekni congratulated the school for being selected to take part in this year’s AAY.

“You are one of the lucky schools because we have received many applications from other schools in Sarawak, but priority is given to the place where we operate,” he said.

According to him, 10 schools from Sarawak will compete at the state-level AAY 2017. Ekni said the state-level judging would be conducted next week and he hoped all the participating schools would be able to impress the judges with their respective projects.

“Out of 10 schools, only one will be selected to compete in the grand final in November,” he added.

Meanwhile SMK Bandar Bintulu AAY team leader Sebastian Bongsu said they had implemented their solar project at Kampung Melaban Bintulu-Miri road to provide electricity, generated from solar power, to the villagers.

The event yesterday was also attended by SMK Bandar Bintulu senior assistant (co-curriculum) Usat Lujah and Bintulu Education Office representative Puyang Ngau Wan.
