KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Technical Education Promotion Charitable Trust (Tegas) will once again conduct its youth forum at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this Oct 14.

The upcoming Forum Belia Tegas (FBT) will be the seventh series. It focuses on youths, aged 18 to 35. The session at BCCK will run from 7.30am to 5pm.

According to Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, FBT aims to update youths on the current information or policies regarding the state’s transformation agenda, especially the digital economy.

“Also during the forum, our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will have a session with the participants where he will discuss the topic ‘Sarawak Transformation Through Digital Economy’,” he disclosed during the press conference on FBT at BCCK yesterday.

Snowdan believed that there are still many Sarawakians, especially youths, who are not fully aware of the meaning of digital economy and its implications to the state.

“The youths, who comprises about 35 per cent – or 2.6 million – of the total population need to understand the operations and implications of digital economy; hence by understanding it, they should be able to participate actively in the state transformation agenda,” he said.

For the FBT at BCCK, Snowdan is expecting a turnout of some 4,000 participants for the one-day event, where the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) will also hold its ‘SPARK’ programme, featuring a number  young and vibrant speakers.

It will also have the ‘HackWeekend Kuching’ and ‘HackWeekend Junior’ — the events where youths collaborate to produce web, mobile and hardware projects from scratch, within 36 to 54 hours.

The winners will then pitch their projects to 4,000 youths.

Those interested to participate in FBT can register online via www.fbt17.eventbrite.com.

GrabCar is supporting FBT by offering special rates for rides to and from BCCK via promo-code ‘GRABTEGAS’. The offer is valid only for Oct 14.

Tegas chief operating officer Awangku Merali Pengiran Mohamed was also present at the press conference.
