KUCHING: The issue of drug abuse among students needs to be addressed as it will lead to problems in society if not handled seriously.

In pointing this, Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said parents, teachers, enforcement agencies and the people at large should play their role in addressing this issue.

Speaking at the ‘Training of Trainers’ (TOT) for the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) DUN Demak Laut Squad, Bako zone at Dewan Bako Indah here recently, Dr Hazland added that drug abuse is also the reason for social ills and low academic performance among students.

“Those with drug problems will have problems focusing on their studies and, at the end, their lives will be ruined.

“This is why the family institution is vital to protect family members, particularly the young ones, from getting involved in drug-related activities,” he said.

The programme yesterday was jointly organised by DUN Demak Laut Service Centre and AADK.

More than 150 participants from 13 villages participated in the one-day programme, which aim to expose participants on the dangers of drug abuse and to train participants to be AADK informers against suspected drug abusers in their village.
