BINTULU: A 59-year-old man has been remanded for four days starting yesterday (Oct 4) to assist investigation into a cheating case framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Muhammad Hafiz Mohd Noor ordered the accused to be reproduced in court on Oct 8.

It is said that  on Jan 27, the accused had offered a 24-acre land located at Sungai Salim in Sibu for a sale price of RM410,000 to the complainant, who is his friend.

The complainant, at 10am on Feb 2, handed over RM200,000 being half of the sale price to the accused and on June 8 gave the remainder — RM210,000 — without any sale and purchase agreement.

The complainant was working abroad and when he returned home on July 28 he went to see the accused and was told that the money had been given to a man known as Sigan Kemarau who was said to be the one who sold the land.

However, the accused said he could not remember the account number and claimed the loss of  the receipt of the transaction. Sigan also could not be reached.

Feeling cheated, the complainant lodged a police report at the one-stop centre here. The accused was detained around 3.30pm on Oct 3 at the police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department.
