KUCHING: Nirun Sae-Ueng of Thailand took the lead in the opening day of the PGM-MNRB Sarawak Golf Championship with an impressive six-under par 66 at the Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) in Santubong here yesterday.

The Thai rookie, who won the Sabah leg of this year’s PGM’s Asian Development

Tour (ADT), led Malaysia’s Kiishaan Tharlingam by just one stroke while James Byrne of Scotland was just two strokes adrift.

The opening day was keenly contested with four players – Poosit Supupramai and Puk Pradittan of Thailand, Masaru Takahashi of Japan and Lake Snyder of USA – all returning similar 3 under par 69.

DGCC general manager Roslan Mohd Salleh is expecting more surprises on the second day in view of the stiff competition among the top-flight golfers.
