KUCHING: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has enrolled at least 70,000 Malaysians as friends of the Anti-Corruption Revolution Movement (Gerah) in the help to fight corruption and abuse of power.

Its state director Dato Badrul Shah Norman said the figure had exceeded the MACC’s target, which was to enrol 50,000 individuals as friends of Gerah by Oct 1 when the anti-graft agency celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“We want more individuals to come forward to register with MACC to be friends of Gerah. No one is under compulsion but we want more to be part of us to fight corruption and abuse of power,” he said before the signing of the Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) involving Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) here yesterday.

Badrul said Gerah was launched to motivate more Malaysians to fulfill their social and moral obligation in keeping the nation free from corrupt practices.

He added that IBR was different from the Corporate Integrity Pledge (CIP) because the former stressed on openness and accountability displayed by the leadership to make sure an agency was free from corruption and abuse of power.

He lauded the state LKIM for taking a bold step to sign the pledge in making sure its officers would steer clear of all forms of corruption and abuse of power.

“The Sarawak government, led by the chief minister and state cabinet miniters, was the first to sign the pledge in January this year.

“This shows the commitment of the state government to be free from corruption and abuse of power. It is a commendable effort that others should emulate,” he said.

Badrul also said the MACC had launched a couple of campaigns to create awareness of the impact of corruption.

Among those was the 3J campaign (Jangan Hulur, Jangan Kawtim, Jangan Settle), he said, adding that no individual should be involved in any form of corrupt practices – be it as a giver or taker.
