‘Run-down schools to be replaced, repaired’

MARUDI: The state government has a plan to replace or repair dilapidated school buildings in the state so that students and teachers have an environment that is conducive for learning and teaching.

To ensure that the project can be carried out, a sum of RM1 billion had been approved by the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, for the purpose.

Deputy speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is also Mulu assemblyman, said this at the presentation of awards of excellence to students of SMK Telang Usan at the school yesterday.

His text of speech was read by the political secretary to the

chief minister, Charles Balan Seling.

In his speech, Gerawat also encouraged students to take up Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) so as to be competent in information and communication technology as Sarawak moves towards digital economy as envisaged by the Chief Minister.

He advised students to be serious about learning the English language, saying it is a lingua franca for commerce and communication.

Later, Charles announced a grant of RM10,000 from Gerawat for the parent-teacher association of SMK Telang Usan.

He also presented MRP cheques to the JKKK of Rumah Adam (RM10,000), JKKK of Rumah Jamit Stapang A (RM30,000) and BEM Marudi (RM15,000).

School principal Abdul Rahman Abdullah @ Nicholas Kanyan and PTA chairman Chong Tze Kiat also spoke at the function.

Present were SAO Reagan Edwin, Marudi Bomba chief Maureen Sim and community leaders.
