KUCHING: Local hope Jimmy Liong Kai Long failed to make the cut for the main draw of the boys singles competition of the 30th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup (II) ITF Junior Circuit (Grade 3) at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Centre yesterday.

The Bintulu lad, who received a bye in the first round of the qualifying, lost to top seed and ITF No 1165 Rikard Raad from Sweden in yesterday’s second round.

However, it was a different story for his compatriot Danial Ahmad Farid who upset the third seed Kevin Chen of Denmark in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0.

Danial was a first-round winner over Norway’s Fabian Jensen 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday and the only Malaysian to enter today’s main draw.

The second seed Hiroki Fujita of Japan also booked his place in the main draw after beating Malaysia’s Christian Andre Liew Sheng 7-5, 6-0.

Fourth seed Markus Sorensen of Norway, who is ITF No 2237, was the other seeded casualty as he went down 7-6(5), 6-4 to unseeded challenger from Sweden Mans Stapel.

Meanwhile, the fifth and sixth seeds did not face much problem in checking into the main draw, with Wang Le Tian of China acing another Swede Marlon Magkoutas 6-4, 6-1 and Japan’s Nowa Matsubayashi overcoming the resistance from Great Britain’s Retallick Liu Hui 6-4, 6-3.

There was no qualifying matches for the girls singles.
