KUCHING: Local challengers did not fare well in the first round of the boys singles competition at the 30th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup (II) ITF Junior Circuit (Grade 3) at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Centre yesterday.

All except one were knocked out, leaving the top seed Christian Didier Chin the sole Malaysian flag bearer.

The Sabah lad, who is ITF no 81, received a first round bye and will play Sweden’s Leyton Rivera after the latter beat qualifier from Japan Nowa Matsubayashi 6-2, 6-2.

Wild card entry Tan Lin En from Sarawak failed to advance as he lost 0-6, 2-6 to Norwegian Herman Hoeyeraal and Darrshan Suresh fell to Wang Cheng-Chieh of Taiwan, losing 4-6, 4-6.

The good run of another Malaysian qualifier Danial Ahmad Farid was brought to a halt when he lost 3-6, 2-6 to Thailand’s Yuttana Charoenphon while Shamirul Shahril Mohd Adam Das lost 7-6(3), 3-6, 3-6 to Norway’s Herman H Jentoft and Naufal Siddiq Kamaruzzaman bowed out 3-6, 0-6 to Michael Francis Eala of the Philippines.

In today’s second round, second seed Seita Watanabe of Japan will meet Theerta Shashank Macherla of India and the third seed, also from India, Digvijay Pratap Singh faces Arthur Craig Patino after the latter edged Indonesian Muhammad Althaf Dhaifullah 7-6(6) 7-5.

The boys doubles first round saw Taiwanese pair of Yu Chieh Cheng-Yu Hua-chen booking their place in round two with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Herman H Jentoft-L Hellum Lilleengen from Norway while the combination of Danial Ahmad Farid (Malaysia) and Hiroki Fujita (Japan) eased past Michael Francis Eala (Philippines) and Shamirul Shahril Mohd Adam Das (Malaysia) 6-3, 6-1.

Meanwhile, only three Malaysians are left in the girls singles competition, with elder sister Elysia Wan blanking Taiwan’s Hou Ya-Jo 6-0, 6-0 and younger sister Elsa Wan getting a bye together with Tan Lin Xin from Sarawak.

Those who fell at the first hurdle yesterday were Tan Xin Hung and Chai Sie Ding.

The top seeds are in action today, with top seed China’s Zheng Qinwen playing Philippines Rafaella Jean Villanueva and second seed Park Sohyun facing Chang Ting-Pei of Taiwan.
