SARIKEI: One of the three pontoons at the Sarikei Express Wharf was reduced to a wreck after yesterday’s high tide.

The jetty, which was damaged since early this year, was facing structural problems and the Public Works Department (JKR) is scheduled to build a new one.

“We are aware of the situation and will cordon off the area for public safety,” Acting Controller of Sarawak Rivers Board, Abang Mohamad Abang Naili told The Borneo Post.

Abang Mohamad explained that although the wharf’s day-to-day operations came under the purview of SRB, the structural work was still under JKR.

SRB will coordinate the report and liaise with JKR for the repairs, he said.

Abang Mohammad said the Sarikei wharf has three gangways, and only one of the gangways is damaged.

“The collapsed one hasn’t been in use for a long time and the public can still use two other gangways,” he explained.
