BINTULU: Students and parents should look at technical education from another perspective.
“One should not look at academic excellence as a yardstick for success,” said Assistant Minister of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah.
He said most parents wanted their children to excel in academics but that’s not everything because not all students are able to enter tertiary education.
He said each students had their own learning capability … many were very good in academics but others good in technical skills.
“Life is about learning.
“For those who excel in academics the opportunities are wide open.
“The same goes to those with technical knowledge and skills,” said Sagah when officiating at SMK Kidurong graduation ceremony for its Form 6 and Special Education at Bintulu Chinese Chamber of Commerce hall here yesterday.
He was representing Minister of Utilities, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi.
Sagah said looking at the current job market, those with technical knowledge and skills were more likely to earn higher salaries.
Skilled manpower was needed by industries, which is in line with the state government’s industrial policy, he said, adding that teachers should be able to guide their students about their future direction based on their strength and capability.
On another subject, Sagah said he was glad that SMK Kidurong is one of schools having classes for students with special needs, which is a great service to the community and country.
Bintulu Education officer Fred Entau and SMK Kidurong principal Rosli Salleh were also present at the function.
