KUCHING: Sarawak is a fine example of unity in diversity, a powerful value that has turned the state into a desirable place to live in, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.

She pointed out that many people have expressed their eagerness to live and work in Sarawak.

“A lot of times when I returned to Peninsula Malaysia, people asked me how do you bring Sarawak (its values) to Semenanjung? I told them that our unity comes from within, it is naturally in us. We have been like this since the beginning of time,” she said.

“So be yourself because you are what you want to become and think. Harmonisation lies in what you see. Even Tok Nan (the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) said everyone can live in this big land,” she said.

Nancy was responding to an aspiration for strong leaderships in the country and state that moved away from politics based on race, ethnicity and religion during the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue held at the Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Auditorium of Teacher Education Institute (IPG) Batu Lintang Campus here today.

A large crowd consisting of teacher trainees, lecturers, department officers and many others participated in the dialogue moderated by IPG Batu Lintang Campus Social Science Department lecturer Awang Hapeni Awang Onget.

Nancy added that these values must be inculcated among students because school and education also play an important role in shaping an individual’s personality and character.

“Today, our leadership is faced with challenges due to the rise of advanced technology and social media. People should not spread negative or extreme things online that could lead to misunderstandings,” she advised, noting the impact of ethnic prejudice content on social media on national unity.
