LAWAS: The state government has appointed a local timber company, Samling, to repair Ba Kelalan road which is in very poor condition.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Dato Henry Sum Agong said the government had allocated RM36 million for the repair works which will  start this year.

Henry, who is also Lawas MP, said this when met after the opening of ‘One District One Industry’ roadshow here yesterday.

He was happy that the road problem in Ba Kelalan has received positive responsefrom the authorities after being highlighted to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing and Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in July and October.

Henry added that the (Ba Kelalan) road meant for light vehicles had actually been repaired by Malaysian Armed Force (ATM) under its Jiwa Murni Project.

However, heavy vehicles of more than 10 tonnes are reported to have frequently used the road after various development activities were carried out in the highlands, and thus contributed to the road damage.

Henry also told the press that the construction of the new Lawas Hospital is entering the second phase.

“The second phase of the work is now under the tender process. I hope the work will start soon. This RM200 million-project is the most awaited project by the people here.”

Other mega projects coming Lawas’ way are the provision of basic infrastructure such as roads, Customs, Immigration Quarantine (CIQ) for Ba Kelalan, new district police headquarters, new airport, Highland Development Area (HAD), dams and more.
