KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth do not believe the effects of the Umno-PAS electoral pact in Peninsular Malaysia will spill over to Sarawak during the next campaign for the parliamentary election.

Its Youth publicity chief Andy Lawrence said the pact will not deteriorate Sarawakian rights as far as religion and race are concerned.

It will not affect the Dayak in particular too, he said.

“As long as it does not interfere with our pursuit to fully restore our rights within the Malaysia Agreement 1963, we will treat it as a private arrangement between Umno and PAS.

“Whether we agree or not with the Umno-PAS pact, we need to know the understandings otherwise we won’t comment on anything,” said Andy.

Andy added that he counted himself among fellow Sarawakians who do not subscribe to PAS’ political ideology, which leaned towards the Islamisation of Malaysia.

SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has said that as long as the Umno-PAS electoral pact was not sanctioned by the BN supreme council, the move by Umno would just be a private arrangement to strengthen the party in the next general election.

Opposition parties like the state PKR and state DAP leaders have expressed their displeasure over this latest development, while PBB supreme council member Datuk Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah said as long as the pact is to unite Malaysians and BN as a whole, he would have no issue with it.
