Four Malaysians advance to final qualifying round

Christian Didier Chin of Malaysia to looking to book his place in the main draw after making it to the final qualifying round.

KUCHING: Four Malaysians made it to the final qualifying round of the ITF Men’s Pro Circuit US$15,000 at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Centre yesterday after winning their second round matches.

They are Shamirul Shahril Mohd Adam Das, Christian Oliver Lee, Christian Didier Chin and Damien Rocky who all received a first round bye.

Shamirul beat Canadian hopeful Shane Nicholls 6-0, 6-4  to meet China’s Chen Iiran who upset third seed Guo Tianjia also of China 6-1, 6-3.

Christian Oliver Lee thumped Singaporean Sophiaan Abdul Wahab 6-0, 6-0 and Damien Rocky sent Singapore’s Roy Hobbs packing 6-2, 6-2.

Losing boys singles semi-finalist of the 30th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup (II) ITF Junior Circuit (Grade 3) last Saturday Christian Didier Chin also booked his place in the final qualifying with a 6-4, 6-1 win over South African Philip Franken and will play sixth seed Ryota Kishi of Japan. The only Malaysian who failed to advance yesterday was Danial Ahmad Farid who lost 1-6, 2-6 to China’s He Xiaoyu.

Tournament top seed from India Nitin Kumar Sinha also made an early exit when he was shocked 7-6(5), 6-3 by Thailand’s Palaphoom Kovapitukted and the latter will next face Daiki Kato from Japan for the ticket to Tuesday’s main draw. Two Malaysians Ahmed Deedat Abdul Razak and Syed Mohd Agil Syeb Naguib are already in the main draw after they were given wild card entries by the organiser.

India’s Nitin Kumar Sinha made an early exit with a 6-7 (5), 3-6 defeat to Thailand’s Palaphoom Kovapitukted in the second round qualifying at SLTA Tennis Centre yesterday.
