KUCHING: A newborn baby girl was abandoned by her mother at the nursery of a private hospital here today.

The 3pm incident came to light when a nurse realised that the 23-year-old Indonesian woman went missing from her room.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said the baby had previously been placed in the nursery due to health issues after she was born at 3.30pm on Saturday.

“The hospital tried to locate the suspect within the hospital compound but failed,” he said when contacted today.

Commenting further, Abang Ahmad said a quick check with the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings found that the suspect had escaped without the knowledge of the hospital.

According to him, police have informed the Indonesian Consulate to assist in the investigation and detection the suspect.

It is learned that the baby is still warded at the hospital’s nursery.

The case is being investigated under Section 31 of the Child Act 2001 (Amendment 2016).
