KUCHING: The police are currently in the second phase of the ongoing crackdown against illegal gambling, focusing specifically on illegal lottery following the successful eradication of machine-based gambling as well as cyber gambling.

From Oct 9 to 15, a total of 30 individuals were arrested in statewide raids targeting sales of illegal lottery tickets, revealed Sarawak CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar.

According to him, the police continue to receive complaints against the sale of illegal lottery, especially in the city here.

“We received the most number of complaints on illegal lottery from Kuchingites, especially at the Kenyalang Park area,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dev Kumar revealed that apart from the arrests, police seized cash amounting to RM4,855, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationeries.

Additionally, he said nine other individuals were arrested over the past week for gambling in a public area, and for providing ‘reload’ services for tablet-based cyber gambling.

“Two raids were conducted against gambling on a public place in Kuching and Limbang, which saw eight individuals arrested, while a man providing reload services for tablet-based cyber gambling was also arrested in Lawas.”

All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
