MIRI: The parent teachers’ association (PTA) for SK St Joseph Miri is seeking financial help from the government to kick-start the roofing project for the school’s open assembly hall.

Chairman of the school’s PTA Goh Ser Seng said the proposed project would cost RM500,000.

“It is always our dream to implement this project. However for us to start the project, we have to come up with about 25 per cent of the total cost of the project.

“Frankly speaking, we really cannot afford the amount. Hopefully, the government can assist us so the school will be able to provide the pupils with comfortable environment while carrying out activities such as morning assembly at the open hall,” he stated to the media after briefing SUPP Piasau branch youth chief councillor Aries Leong on the proposed project at the school premises yesterday.

Goh explained that the hall’s roofing is a much needed project for the school because the school through its PTA has had to fork out RM400 to RM500 to rent canopy for the school to hold activities outside the classrooms.

“Spending the money for canopy renting is really a waste of fund. That’s why the idea for the roofing project was mooted.’

“We really want to start the project as soon as possible but to fork out the RM125,000 to kick start the project is really beyond our financial capacity.”

He said the association has informed Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin as well as Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting of the proposed project.

Both of them had suggested the PTA kick-start the project after which they will allocate government grants to help

finance its construction.

Meanwhile, the school headmistress Mariam Menadu Grasi thanked the PTA for its efforts in addressing the various needs of the pupils.

“PTA has truly made the school what it is today. All the funds collected by the PTA through various events were channeled to assist the needy pupils and to finance the cost for sending the pupils to attend competitions outside the city,” she said.
