SEPANG:  Improved durian orchards have the potential of becoming tourist attractions which offer tourists the experience of eating durian at the orchards, said  Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA)  chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin.

He said that durian, attracted foreign tourists, especially those from China, to visit Malaysia.

“Some Chinese tourists travel far to Malaysia just to taste our durian. The experience of eating fresh durian surrounded by a refreshing village environment gives a unique and invaluable experience to durian lovers,” he told reporters at the FAMA office in KL International Airport (KLIA) here after attending a programme involving the delivery of frozen Musang King by air to Guanxi, China yesterday.

The delivery of the frozen durian was made in conjunction with the Nanning Durian Festival 2017 held from Nov 3 to 5.

Apart from durian, orchard-owners could also introduce other fruits such as mangosteen and rambutan to foreign tourists, he added.

Badruddin said FAMA would continue efforts to expand the Malaysian durian market and was eyeing on promoting durian to South Korea and Canada. — Bernama
