KOTA KINABALU: Seven people, including a couple, have been arrested at two locations by the police for alleged drug offences committed in the state capital.

Acting city police chief, Superintendent George Abdul Rakman, said the first arrest was made when five men, aged between 18 to 22 years old, were caught with 4.43 grams of marijuana in their possession along Sulaman Road in Menggatal at around 9.50 am on Tuesday.

“Police spotted a car parked by the side of the road and when my men went to inspect, one of the suspect was seen throwing something out from the back passenger window. After retrieving the item thrown and upon further inspection, police found some dried leaves believed to be marijuana weighing at 4.43 grams in the men’s possession,” he disclosed yesterday.

The suspects were subsequently detained and taken to the police headquarters for further investigation.

Preliminary urine tests on the suspects showed positive result for drug abuse, said George, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 15 (1)(a) and Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The second arrest involved a couple who was detained for possessing 1.43 grams of syabu near the Lintas Plaza roundabout in Luyang on Tuesday at around 9.55 pm when a police MPV spotted a couple on a motorcycle behaving in a suspicious manner.

“When the police approached the couple, one of them tried to escape, but we managed to apprehend him. An inspection conducted found 11 plastic packets containing some crystal-like substance, believed to be syabu, kept inside a small container.

“The drugs weighed 1.43grams with a street value of up RM250,” said George, adding that police believe the suspects were waiting for customers prior to their arrests.

The suspects, aged 22 and 15 years old, have been remanded to facilitate police investigation under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
