KUCHING: Police arrested a 35-year-old man believed to be the main suspect in the robbery of a goldsmith shop at Jalan Market here last week.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said the suspect was detained under citizen’s arrest at Jalan Ban Hock around 6.30pm on Tuesday before being surrendered to the police at Kuching Central Police Station.

Abang Ahmad added that the suspect from Sri Aman was unemployed and tested positive for methamphetamine.

“The suspect was produced in court today (yesterday) and placed on three-day remand to facilitate investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He pointed out that the arrest came after a woman lodged a police report on Oct 11 that the suspect had entered a goldsmith shop to purchase a gold bracelet. He put on the bracelet worth RM8,300 before fleeing in a car.

It was learnt that a man, believed to be his accomplice, was nabbed by police at an eatery at Jalan Rock on the day of the incident (Oct 11).

Abang Ahmad said initial investigation revealed that the suspect had a history of committing 11 criminal offences.
