Set in a rectangular layout, Container City comprises of 14 stalls constructed out of shipping containers, serving more than 120 types of foods.

“We came up with the idea using huge containers as food stalls to bring the impression of the uniqueness of this place, as this concept has never been done in Miri before,” said Kelvin Gom, one of the directors of Container City, when met at its opening day yesterday.

He explained the food court offers young entrepreneurs and cooks the opportunity to showcase their specialties and, at the same time, provide them an avenue to start or expand their business to tap into a ready pool of customers.

Apart from local food, there are also Korean, Thai and Taiwanese cuisines, he added, pointing out that although there are 14 stalls altogether, no two stalls sell the same food as each stall has something different to offer.

Among the stalls operating at Container City are a noodle stall, burger stall, a stall that specialises in king prawn (udang galah) noodles, nasi kerabu stall, kebab stall, a stall which specialises in Taiwanese egg-based cuisine, and stalls that serve nasi lemak, nasi lelapan, nasi goreng, and western food.

Container City is comprises two levels – the ground floor food court and the upper deck. The upper walls of the food court depict superhero characters like Iron Man, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk, painted by students from Riam Road Secondary School.

There is also a mini game room where kids can play the latest PlayStation 4 (PS4) games for free.

With this new food court right in the heart of Miri city, Kelvin expressed his high hopes that Container City will prove popular with the local community as well as visitors from abroad.

“We want tourists to come and enjoy the food here and we hope that their visit to Miri will not be complete without patronising Container City,” he enthused.

Container City is open daily from 7am till 11pm.

With a seating capacity of 300, the food court also caters to private parties and functions.
