2 men sustain injuries in shooting at coffeeshop

JOHOR BAHRU: Two men were injured after getting shot while having a drink with several friends at a coffee shop in Pekan Bukit Gambir near Tangkak yesterday.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the incident at about 4 am was believed to be carried out by an unidentified suspect wearing a full face helmet and armed with a semi-automatic pistol.

“The suspect fired seven shots at close range in the direction of the victim’s group.

“After the incident, the suspect fled on a motorcycle,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Mohd Khalil said both victims in their 30’s were sent to Muar and Melaka hospitals for treatment.

They were reported to be in stable condition, said Mohd Khalil.

The motive of the incident was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 3(10 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, he said.

In an unrelated incident, a teenager was seriously injured on the back and head when slashed by a group of about 15 men at a flat housing at Jalan Tasek 64, Bandar Seri Alam near Pasir Gudang, early yesterday.

Seri Alam district police chief Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said the incident occurred at 2.05 am after the victim, aged 17, had told off two men for playing loud music from the speaker of their car which was parked at the flat housing area.

”An argument broke out between them, before a group of men arrived in a car and a few motorcycles (and attacked the victim),” he said in a statement yesterday.

Jokhiri said the attackers, some armed with knife and machete, were believed not occupants at the flats.

The victim is now at the Sultan Ismail Hospital for treatment and that the police were looking for the suspects.
