KOTA KINABALU: Up to October 19 this year, 55,000 users have registered for KK City WiFi, the free and first seamless WiFi enabled city program in the country.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) Information Technology Department director David Ng said folk in the city have already been aware of the service and have started to register since end of 2016.

He said city residents and visitors need only register using several social media platforms and enjoy continuous WiFi up to 30mbps and 10GB data within the area coverage.

He said so far the coverage is along the vicinity of Oceanus Mall to Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Jalan Pantai, Jalan Tugu, Lintasan Deasoka, Kampung Air and Plaza Shell, which is in the phase one of the project.

“These are the current on areas. By next week, we will be able to put up the Gaya Street side. Gaya Street is still in the grey area of the map, by next week it will be blue,” said Ng, adding the WiFi Access Points (APs) will be finally installed in the challenging Gaya Street area.

Ng said users on the KK City WiFi will not be able to access sites that are obstructed by the Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

He added that DBKK is also looking at a phase two expansion, which will head north and south of the Kota Kinabalu Central Business District (CBD).

“We are trying to wire the whole Likas Bay Public Park and also to south cycle from Imago Mall and all the way to SOCSO (Buiding). We are trying to do these two parts,” he said.

“So by doing so can go out to more areas and of course at the same time have bigger coverage area,” he added while stressing that the plans have not been set in stone yet.
