KUCHING: Some RM530 million has been spent on transforming the economy of Batang Lupar parliamentary constituency, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, he said the constituency had ‘changed a lot compared to the last time’, especially in economic activities.

“We have spent RM530 million on paddy (plantation) in Lingga. This will offer good opportunities for people in the area, by planting paddy in a new way.

“We believe it can help to increase  the income of our rural people,” he said before flagging off the ‘Kembara Batang Lupar’ programme here yesterday.

About 40 media practitioners are taking part in the three-day programme organised by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

With him at the press conference was Minister of Women, Family and Community Development and Batang Lupar MP Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, said a lot of infrastructure projects are going on in the (Batang Lupar) constituency.

“Batang Sadong Bridge, village roads as well as electricity and water supplies are among them.

“Regardless of how difficult it is to implement programmes, we, the Barisan Nasional government, will do them for the people. We hope our efforts will reach out to the people in rural areas,” he added.
