Strong winds leave trail of damage in city

KUCHING: Strong winds starting at 2pm yesterday created havoc at various areas in the city as trees, debris and rooftops were blown-off causing damages in its wake.

The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) revealed that among the reports they received was a driver who was injured when a tree fell on his vehicle.

Other cases included fallen trees, blown off roof tops and a loose gutter which pierced through the windshield of a car parked at a commercial centre in Pending.

A bank at Jalan Song Thian Chok was also not spared as the strong wind shattered one of its main entrance’s glass doors.

On another note, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (Met Malaysia) director general Alui Bahari in a statement yesterday said typhoon Lan will not pass through Sabah and Sarawak.

Typhoon Lan he stated, is currently in the east of the Philippines and is expected to move north.

Side effects of the typhoon he said has caused damp weather with strong winds in the west and north of Sabah and Labuan and is expected to continue until today (Oct 21).

The department has issued a “yellow” level warning for Sarawak and Sabah in view of the strong wind conditions.
