Fire, APM personnel busy clearing trees downed by strong winds

MIRI: It was a hectic day Friday for personnel of Miri and Lopeng Fire and Rescue stations and the Civil Defence Force (APM) after strong winds and heavy rain hit the city.

The heavy rain and strong winds fell trees, blew roof tops and downed signboards at several areas in the city since morning.

Zone 6 Fire and Rescue station chief, Supt Law Poh Kiong, said Miri and Lopeng fire stations received not less than six calls from members o f the pubic askingthem to remove fallen trees from the roads.

Teams were deployed to clear uprooted trees and fallen branches and debris at Jalan Permyjaya, Marina Bay, Jalan Kuala Baram Lama, Happy Garden in Riam, Jalan Batu 7 and in the vicinity of Miri Marriot Resort and Spa.

Others were sent to Kampung Lereng Bukit and SMK Luak.

Law said his personnel were working around-the-clock to monitor the situation since Thursday to avoid any untoward incident.

“We also checked the social sites and our handphones in case we received any messages regarding fallen or uprooted trees, flash flood and others. That way, we can mobilise our team faster,” he said.

Meanwhile, APM officer Capt (PA) Mohd Hazle Shah Abd Hamid said they received eight calls involving fallen trees on Thursday and Friday.

“I would like to advise Mirians to be extra vigilant due to the current weather condition and strong winds to avoid any untoward incident,” he said.
