MIRI: Members of Junior Chamber International (JCI) are urged to also give their focus on the development of digital economy by putting their expertise to work.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture, Datuk Lee Kim Shin said JCI has many members who are professionals and can contribute their expertise towards development.

“As Sarawak is moving into digital economy, it is our hope that the youths in Sarawak would capitalise on this and make sure it becomes a reality for all Sarawakians. We can reap the benefits of the digital economy which is spreading worldwide too,” he said in his address at JCI Malaysia Annual Convention Gala Night at Meritz Hotel on Saturday.

Also present were JCI Malaysia president Nurul Huda Mohamed Afandi, the convention director Huang Hui Chen, organising chairman Tan Chin Jie from JCI Lutong as well as JCI delegates from Taiwan, Singapore, Philippine, Europe and Malaysia.

Using China as example, Lee said the country is living in the digital economy where traders and buyers use online applications for any purchase.

“Buyers do not pay cash anymore but simply transfer the amount into the trader’s account and such practice can also be done here,” he said.

He also urged JCI youths to move towards digital economy by contributing new ideas or packages that help strengthen the economy.

“Gadgets such as iPhone already have numerous versions and generations, therefore we should also expand our ideas and find ways to improve our products,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Lee said that his long association with JCI movement has shown that, JCI members are proactive, positive and confident.

“They have undertaken projects, which benefited the youths and the local community as a whole.

“It is my hope that all JCI members would complement and support the government’s initiatives to transform the economy and provide a better future for our nation and her people,” he said.

As JCI is a worldwide leadership development and training organisation for young people from age 18 to 40, Lee said it is very important for the JCI as an organisation, to complement the government’s effort in promoting youth leadership, community, education, sports, business and international exchanges, to create positive changes among youths and their communities.

He also congratulated JCI Lutong, this year’s host, for promoting Sarawak as a choice venue for JCI convention, conference or meeting.
