KUCHING: It is the responsibility of all Sarawakians to ensure that the state continues to enjoy religious harmony and racial unity.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah the government is doing all it can to ensure that nothing will disrupt the peace and harmony that the state has been enjoying for many years.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, he disclosed that the Unit for Other Religion (Unifor) in Sarawak was in constant touch with state Islamic officials to exchange ideas and opinion from time to time.

“It is important that we do not lose this (religious harmony and racial unity). I believe everyone in Sarawak is also doing their best to sustain the religious harmony and racial unity,” he added.

He encouraged people of different faiths, religion or race to visit each other during special celebration.

Uggah was speaking to reporters during a Deepavali visit to Sarawak Sikh Temple Association president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira’s house.

Interviewed by reporters during the visit, Dr Kalwinder not only thanked everyone who visited his house during the event but was also grateful that people of other communities and religions had come to wish his family happy Deepavali.

“Sarawakians have always been very supportive of each other. It has been my tradition to welcome friends who are of different religion or race to my house during Deepavali and I hope it continues to be that way for as long as it can,” said Dr Kalwinder.

Dr Kalwinder is also a committee member of Unifor.

Also present during the visit were Uggah’s wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, Unifor director Datuk Dr Ngenang Janggu, Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) secretary-general Ambrose Linang and others.
