KUCHING: Members of the public are invited to witness the ground-breaking ceremony for the rebuilding of the iconic Satok Suspension Bridge tomorrow at 3pm.

The ceremony, to be held at Kubah Ria in Medan Niaga Satok, will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

A project of the Infrastructure Development and Transportation Ministry, it will be under Public Works Department (JKR). Syarikat Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn Bhd was appointed contractor for the project.

The RM8.05-million bridge will be recreated according to its original design at its original location, and upgraded to allow the passage of boats.

The 213-metre long and 3-metre wide stainless steel structure will follow the British Standard (BS).

The original Satok Suspension Bridge was constructed in 1923 and completed in 1926 to hold water pipes connecting the reservoir in Matang and Kuching Town.

It also became the passageway for pedestrians and light vehicles such as bicycles, trishaws and motorcycles.

It was closed in 1992 due to safety reasons and eventually collapsed into the river on Oct 7, 2004.
