Students have no choice but forced to wait at the roadside for their parents.
MIRI: School management should give priority to the safety of school infrastructure.
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this is to ensure the school is a truly safe place for students to get formal education.
“In any school development or upgrade, the safety of students is of utmost concern,” he told The Borneo Post after making a site visit to SMK Baru yesterday.
He rejected the proposed student pickup zone submitted by the school management.
“The design of the project proposed for the school’s student pickup zone is too close to the road without due regard for student safety, so I’ve asked the Public Works Department (JKR) to assist the school with the design.”
He suggested JKR build the student pickup zone on inner land of the school to ensure the safety of students and their parents, and avoid traffic congestion in the area.
Also present during the site visit were Divisional Engineer from JKR Miri Chong Chi Fam and councillors from Miri City Council (MCC).
On an unrelated issue, he reminded the councillors to clear the fallen trees that had hit the school fencing during a storm.
